A Straightforward Guide to Writing Romantic Fiction

There is a new edition available! Available from or!

Over the years, I've run many workshops or courses on how to write romances for writers' groups, literature festivals, and other events. On these occasions, I'm often asked many of the same questions, and there seem to be a number of things that keep cropping up that would-be writers want to know. Because of this, I wrote the Straightforward Guide to Writing Romantic Fiction, in which I tried to answer the questions I get asked most frequently.

The book is now in its second edition and the new version has been revised, updated and expanded. All the original material is there, but I've also added my Twelve Point Plan to Writing Romance together with a Question and Answer session I did on the 5 Ws (Who, Where, When, What and Why) of Writing Romance . This is reproduced by permission of eHarlequin on whose site——it originally appeared.

The Straightforward Guide is intended to provide information and advice for anyone who wants to learn how to write Romantic fiction. It gives a short introduction to all the essential skills needed to succeed, from initial research to the final submission of the typescript.

The book covers the following topics:

  • Creating sympathetic heroines
  • Portraying irresistible heroes
  • Writing effective dialogue
  • Inventing readable plots
  • Working from different viewpoints
  • Putting in sensual scenes
  • Beginnings and endings
  • Finding the right setting
  • Submitting your typescript

Reviews for A Straightforward Guide to Writing Romantic Fiction

Kate Hardy, Mills & Boon Medical Romance Author

A book that does what it says!

If you want to learn all the nuts and bolts of writing romance, and you want to know the facts instead of ruffling through pages of flowery prose, this is the book for you.

Kate Walker's book does exactly what it says - it's a straightforward guide. She starts by making you think about why you want to write the book (motivation's as important for an author as it is for a character!!); then takes you through creating your characters and their dialogue, their setting, plot and conflict, viewpoint and love scenes; shows you how to craft a good beginning, middle and end; teaches you how to target and submit your work, reminds you about the 5 Ws (and one H),and even gives you a 12-point plan to help you work our what you need to do for your own book.

Kate really knows her stuff and it shows. This book is very clear, very honest—and has a sense of humour thrown in. For new romance writers, this is one of the best investments you could make in your career.
